Abstract:
The four branch-out rivers, Songzi River, Hudu River, Ouchi River and Tiaoxian River, from the Jiangjiang River to Dongting Lake in the south area of Changjiang River, are important flood diverted passages of the Jingjiang River. Due to the combined effects of the Jingjiang River flood discharging and the backwater from Dongting Lake, the four rivers basin is a flood disasters-prone area. In order to protect the lives and property of people in the basin, the government started to reinforce the dikes after 1998 Flood, and the overall flood protection capacity had been sharply increased by the combination of dike widening and heightening, hidden dangers removal, slope revetment, leakage control of dike foundation and reinforcement of dike-through structure. Several well-performed new techniques such as assembled anti-flood wall and ecological slope are introduced. The engineering practice shows that the endangers after strengthening have obviously decreased in recent years.
