Abstract: The Dongjiang River source region is the important water source and ecological barrier for Guangdong, Jiangxi Provinces and other related areas, and as the major source of Dongshen water supply project for Shenzhen and Hong Kong, it has attracted many attentions from all social circles. To meet the demands of social development, based on the long-term monitoring and research achievements on the water sources area, we carry out demand analysis from 10 aspects that are concerns of the basin management administration and governments, such as water supply safety, ecological compensation, "river chief system", abandoned mine restoration, regional economic construction, water ecological science research in the water sources regions. We analyze the adjustment, layout and planning of water ecological monitoring network in the sources region from 2 aspects of basic water ecological monitoring network construction and special analysis and experiment network construction with the consideration on local resources endowment, industrial structure and network foundations. The new network is characterized as complete in monitoring indexes, more dense in monitoring stations and more in functions, fulfilling the demands of all circles.
