Abstract:
The unconfined compression test was conducted on remolded loess with different dry density and water content via triaxial apparatus, and the matric suction measurement of loess samples was carried out by soil tensiometer. Then, the relationship between the unconfined compressive strength and matrix suction of remolded loess was analyzed. It was indicated that there is a good positive exponential relationship between unconfined compressive strength and matric suction of remolded Malan loess, both of which decrease with the increase of water content and dry density. The unconfined compressive strength of remolded loess increases slightly with the increase of the matrix suction when the matrix suction is low, while it increases sharply with the matrix suction when it is in a high range. The results showed that the change of water content and dry density lead the variation of pore water pressure and pore air pressure, which result in the change of matrix suction, and at the same time the friction and cohesion between soil particles also changed, thus affecting the compressive strength of soil. It is suggested that the compactness and water content of loess subgrade and foundation should be considered in practical engineering.
