Abstract: In August 2020, two consecutive floods occurred in the Jialing River, which caused exceeded guaranteed water level at several gauged stations in downstream of the Jialing River and its tributary, Fujiang River, posing a severe challenge to flood defence in the basin. Firstly, this paper systematically illustrated flood characteristics of Jialing River in 2020. Emphasis was focused on the key cascade reservoirs operation such as Tingzikou Reservoir, which contributed a lot to the flood defence situation of Chongqing City. Additionally, this study evaluated the operation ability of reservoir group in the basin. Finally, joint operation suggestions and measures to further improve the flood defence capacity of the river basin were put forward, in order to provide technical support for the flood defence of the Jialing River
